How Much Does it Cost to Hire a Professional Voiceover Artist for a Corporate Video?

1st Nov 2021

With over a decade working a professional voiceover artist, Jenny is often booked for corporate video reads and chosen for her authentic Lancashire / Manchester accent and conversational Northern tone.

But, what does it cost to hire a professional voiceover artist like Jenny, to record a corporate voiceover?

Well, the starting point is the Basic Studio Fee (or BSF). To put it simply, this is the rate a voiceover artist charges for the hire of their home studio for an approx 3-min corporate, equivalent to approx 1-hour of studio time. And to do this, you can expect to pay anywhere between £200 – £500 (inc. internal usage).

and then we need to negotiate usage – and this is where it can get slightly tricky. As Jenny states…

I understand it can be confusing, but it’s how us Voiceovers make a living. It’s what we’re legally entitled to if the corporate video is for broadcast purposes and in the public domain.

In short, the amount of eyes and ears that can potentially land on the corporate video you commission me for. The more eyes and ears, the higher the usage fee. It may come as a surprise to learn that unless a full buy-out/in perpetuity rate is agreed, even if the end client owns the copyright to the script itself, they don’t actually own the rights to the voice recordings. When you pay a usage fee, you’re buying a licence to USE a voice for your corporate video, across agreed platforms, for an agreed amount of time in an agreed geographical location or locations.

Jenny M. March 2021
And is simply why voiceover artists should not be expected to work to in-perpituity buy-outs, as Jenny continues…

A full buy-out in perpetuity agreement or a flat fee is like Pepsi approaching Beyonce to use one of her songs in their Summer advertising campaign and then continuing to use it across any platform, globally, forever. If it’s an all rights in perpetuity agreement, then there’s nothing stopping Pepsi from really going to town and adding some S-Club 7 backing vocals and a Westlife key change. ”

However, Jenny (and other voiceover artists would agree) that in-perpetuity can be agreed upon on certain occasions, for example, if the VO is for an online explainer video with no commercial usage, or if it’s for a small/local business where the viewership is likely to be small.

Yet, if you really wish to secure in-perpetuity usage rights, then be aware that this will cost you a lot more because you are waiving the usage rights on the artist’s intellectual property and potentially preventing them from voicing for a similar brand/competing company in the future – so the rate has to be worth the risk!

Instead, Jenny suggests opting for a longer licence;

A corporate explainer video like this will no doubt be irrelevant after 12 to 18 months. A 2 – 5 year licence fee should more than cover it and will cost you much less than a full buy-out in perpetuity fee.

Ultimatly, if you’re looking to hire a professional voiceover for your corporate video, then it’s important to remember that it’s not just the artist’s time you’re paying for, but the usage too.

Why Hire a Voiceover at Great British Voices?

As a voiceover bureau (not an agency) at Great British Voices, we do have a bit of flexibility when it comes to rates and always take our client’s budgets into consideration, but at the same time, we never wish to undermine the industry nor our artists by accepting low fees. Therefore we always set our rates in line with the UK rate guide, created by the wonderful team at Gravy for the Brain.

We work on the principle that ”all rates are negotiable” but for us to work to these terms, our clients have to offer us full transparency also. So, providing that there’s no ambiguity on what the job involves and usage required, we’re always happy to negotiate to find you the best rate possible.

Here’s what can you expect if you hire a voiceover artist at Great British Voices;

1. We have over 300 professional British voiceover artists on our books – adults and kids – so no matter what age or accent you’re after, we can deliver and provide customised shortlists and custom demos on request.

2. All of our artists have professional home studio facilities – so no travel restraints or logistically issues to worry about.

3. All of our artists can clean/edit audio to a high standard.

4. Dial-in can be arranged as standard, so you can direct the artist as they record your script.

5. Turnaround time is often between 24-48 hours from receipt of script.

6. We are a small team of 4, so you know you’ll be getting a truly personal service when working with us.

7. We have worked with some of the world’s most well-known brands and have many repeat clients.

8. Wish to book a recognisable voice? We also work alongside a number of high profile Celebrities available for voiceover.

9. We work to fair negotiable rates that does not underpay our artists or undermine the industry.

10. And despite our British branding, we also work alongside an amazing selection of international voiceover artists too, just let us know what language you require.

Voiceovers for Medical Narration – Mental Health, Covid & More…

21st Sep 2021

Having a medical explainer video on your website is a great way to create engagement – and adding a voiceover narrative is a great way to convey your medical message in a budget-friendly and time-effective manner.

And with Mental Health Awareness Day just around the corner (10th October) this is just one occasion in the wellness calendar, where medical professionals always wish to inform, communicate and engage with those who are perhaps struggling, and to help to raise as much awareness as possible of how to enhance positive mental wellbeing, both when at home and in the workplace.

During the peak of the Covid pandemic last year, understandable mental health videos were at an all-time high. But these weren’t just always hard-hitting information pieces, but some feel-good pieces too!

Check our Blanche’s Podcast ‘Isolation + Me’ –
Blanche speaks to a range of interviewees to explore their personal experiences during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Sustainability Speakers and Heading for Sustainable Operations with 100% Renewable Energy Supply.

2nd Aug 2021
Great British Talent Group powered by sustainable energy

Our sustainability speakers are attending COP26.

The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021 and we’re keen to do our bit to help in the fight against climate change.

This is why we are really pleased to announce that our in-house studio is now powered by 100% sustainable energy (and that’s in addition to the ‘Scandi’ levels of wall, roof and floor insulation which keeps our consumption levels to a minimum).

Like many organisations, the Covid-19 lockdown has forced change upon us; our speakers are now delivering on remote platforms, many of our presenters now have their own green-screen self filming setups, and of course, all of our professional voiceover artists already were equipped with their own home studios – so we felt very fortunate to be ahead of the game when it came to home voice recording. You can find out more about all of this below;

But amongst all of this, our business sustainability has also been at the forefront of our minds, and with climate change an ever-growing concern, we wanted to ensure that our studio facilities were as sustainable and environmentally friendly as they can be.

COP26 Sustainability Speakers

COP26 Organising team member David Saddington –

In addition to the practical aspect of adopting a sustainable energy supply, we’re also working with a number of our talented personalities who share our passion, such as young sustainability speaker David Saddington who is a member of the team organising COP26.

Hailing from Yorkshire (where our GB studio is also located) David first became involved with environmental matters when severe flooding hit the county in 2005. From that point, he dedicated all his energy to the cause and effects of climate change.

Below: David talks at the Powering Progress Together convention.

To book David Saddington call us on 01753 439289 or contact us here

Bear Grylls and the COP26 Scouts #promisetotheplanet

Bear Grylls is another of our star environmental speakers and was the UK’s youngest ever Chief Scout when he was appointed in 2009, aged only 34.

What are the Scouts doing about climate change?

From June to November this year, 57 million Scouts from across the world will take a stand and work towards a better world by taking action to reduce climate change. They’ll get hands-on to make a difference wherever they live, use their voices to inspire decision-makers, and record their actions for the planet.

Natalie Fee – City2Sea, Plastic Free & COP26 Sustainability Speaker

Natalie is an award-winning environmental campaigner, author, speaker and founder of City to Sea, a non-profit organisation running campaigns to stop plastic pollution at source.

She has been campaigning against single-use plastic since 2014, founded City to Sea back in 2015 and mostly spends her time connecting to nature, getting inspired by people who know how to fix the mess we’re in and then finding new ways to tell the stories that might just save us, and the magical world we live in, from climate breakdown.

Natalie will be attending COP26 this November.

Choosing a ‘Voice of God’ and why Your Event Needs One?

24th May 2021

For pretty obvious reasons, there haven’t been many (if any) occasions to hire a ‘Voice of God‘ artist over the last year. However, with venues and events now slowly opening their doors, it’s perhaps time to consider who will be your ‘Voice of God’ at your next event?

If you’re not quite sure what a ‘Voice of God’ (VOG) artist is, well they’re the voice heard but not seen. They help the event to run smoothly, perhaps announcing speakers/entertainers , giving information about the next act, or inviting award winners onto stage.

What are the benefits of hiring a ‘Voice of God’

Whether live or pre-recorded, a ‘VOG’ artist is a great way to make the event memorable by add some Hollywood-award glamour. Just check out Gina’s ‘VOG’ reel below, which includes her work with BAFTA…

With a professional ‘VOG,’ their experience sets them in good stead to make impromptu commentary and unexpected last second changes which creates uniqueness and spontaneity to every situation and event, increasing entertainment and eliminating the ‘cringe factor’. Plus their authority and seamless continuation that a really enthusiastic announcer adds can elevate your event to the highest professional level.

Live or Pre-Recorded?

One of the best things about hiring a ‘Voice Of God’ artist is that their commentary can be pre-recorded (a great option if you’re looking to mix the audio with some video content) or be spoken live!

A definite plus point to having the audio pre-recorded is that the script can be tweaked and mistakes rectified . This is great if you wish to edit voiceover to video for example or have any tricky name pronunciations that the artist has to learn.

But there’s no doubt that a pre-record ‘VOG’ can lack charisma. Allowing your ‘VOG’ to host live, can definitely bring a spark of personality and additional humour to the event

As true professionals, what they say might sound ‘off-the cuff’, but it certainly isn’t – they know how to deliver, entertain and engage!

At Great British Voices, all our Voice of God Announcers are the true definition of professionals, from the BAFTA’s to the London Olympics 2012, and so many corporate clients in-between.

If pre-recorded is preferred, then know that ALL of our ‘VOG’ artists have professional home studios, so they can deliver pre-record content remotely (and can be directed via Zoom, Teams or similar) – or can travel to a studio of your choice.

Why Your Website NEEDS an Explainer Video

10th May 2021

Did you know that when it comes to online product reviews, 66% of consumers prefer to watch a video as opposed to reading a text-based review?

And, 84% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service from watching an explainer/demo video?

Therefore, it’s no surprise that explainer videos are a key tool to market a business, but why are they so beneficial?

Explainers are short videos (usually around 3mins or less) that details a company’s product or service. Many companies like to showcase this in the form of an animation, but they can also be pieces presented to camera. You’d usually find these either on the company’s homepage or product pages – depending on what the explainer is about.

So, if you haven’t got an explainer video on your website already, then here’s just a few reasons why should you get one…

  • Easy to understand/consume
  • Shows personality
  • Can be shared easily
  • Can monitor your viewers
  • Helps with SEO

If you’re ready to produce your explainer video, we have many professional voiceover artists and/or presenters ready to help sell your service.

For when it comes to choosing the right voice of your business/product, the voice it seems is just as important as the product itself; In 2017, Wyzowl reported that 75% of consumers decided not to buy a product because the video voiceover annoyed them. An informal and chatty tone is preferred by 83% of consumers.

Check out just a few of the explainers our artist have recorded;

How to Run a Successful & Fully Interactive Virtual Event.

26th Apr 2021

Great British Voices’ Dervla Trainor is the Founder and Co-Host of VO North. Here she shares her top tips on creating the perfect interactive virtual event!

Here’s Dervla’s Top Tip Breakdown;

1. PHYSICAL TOUCH-POINTS

It’s important to help your audience to feel connected, even before the event starts, and just because the event is online, doesn’t mean you can’t have physical aspects as well.

For V.O. North, we sent out surprise swag boxes to participants. The box itself was fully branded in the V.O. North colours and logo (which was also very Instagramable!), and inside was a note from us saying we’re looking forward to having them join us, as well as a few house-keeping notes to prepare for the event and lots of items to be used over the course of the weekend and beyond; items like a branded glass for the happy hour (made of acrylic so it didn’t break in transit!), snacks to eat for energy during the weekend, mini emoji signs to hold up on camera, a note book and pen to take notes, a face mask, and a few more goodies too!.

2. PRIZES!

V.O. North had lots of opportunities throughout the weekend for attendees to win prizes. For the giveaway draws, every attendee name was automatically included with their purchase of a pass.

3. KEEPING IT FUN!

Speaking of prizes, we also kept in mind that this is a creative audience and voice actors can be all sorts of wild and wacky, so it was important to keep it fun.

We had V.O. North’s Got Talent, where top prize was a pass to the 2021 conference. We had trivia on the Saturday night, grouping people into Zoom breakout rooms where they had a chance to win prizes. This was also a good opportunity to network with fellow attendees.

4. NETWORKING DONE BETTER

We had an overwhelming response to our networking events, with many saying they preferred the virtual events that we hosted rather than those in-person. Following the happy hour cheers we hosted a speed-networking event, where people would be randomly grouped into rooms of 4-5 people for 10 minutes. This was great for introverts and shy people, as it skips the initial approach to strangers, which is arguably the most daunting part of any networking… right!

5. IN-PERSON MADE VIRTUAL

We wanted to make sure that our audience felt comfortable and there was still some of that familiarity of an in-person event, even though this was fully virtual. To achieve this we implemented 3 steps;

  1. The Lounge – One of the best parts of a conference is going into the lobby/lounge and seeing who’s around. We kept a virtual “Lounge” Zoom room open throughout the entire weekend. If attendees wanted to take a break from the talks, they could pop into the Lounge and see who’s around for a conversation! There were always people here throughout the entire weekend. It was a huge success.
  1. Audience – We formatted almost all of our sessions to “meeting” style in Zoom, and gave everyone advanced notice that they would be on camera. That way they could look around and see who else was in the audience, just like at a live event. We kept the private messaging open so colleagues could chat with each other and have little side conversations/comments through-out the sessions. And we also made most formats as Q&A style, so people had an opportunity to get engaged in the conversation, rather than just staring at a screen.
  2. One-on-Ones – Throughout the entire weekend, we created an opportunity for attendees to schedule uninterrupted facetime with in-demand pros from all areas of the industry. Therefore not only making this a fully interactive conference, but also a bit of an exhibition/tradeshow too, where people could have more in-depth discussion with specific speakers/talents/creatives, where they could ask questions, gain advice and potentially expand their cliental.

BONUSKEEP ON SCHEDULE!

And make sure time-zones are very clearly marked!
