How Much Does it Cost to Hire a Professional Voiceover Artist for a Corporate Video?

1st Nov 2021

With over a decade working a professional voiceover artist, Jenny is often booked for corporate video reads and chosen for her authentic Lancashire / Manchester accent and conversational Northern tone.

But, what does it cost to hire a professional voiceover artist like Jenny, to record a corporate voiceover?

Well, the starting point is the Basic Studio Fee (or BSF). To put it simply, this is the rate a voiceover artist charges for the hire of their home studio for an approx 3-min corporate, equivalent to approx 1-hour of studio time. And to do this, you can expect to pay anywhere between £200 – £500 (inc. internal usage).

and then we need to negotiate usage – and this is where it can get slightly tricky. As Jenny states…

I understand it can be confusing, but it’s how us Voiceovers make a living. It’s what we’re legally entitled to if the corporate video is for broadcast purposes and in the public domain.

In short, the amount of eyes and ears that can potentially land on the corporate video you commission me for. The more eyes and ears, the higher the usage fee. It may come as a surprise to learn that unless a full buy-out/in perpetuity rate is agreed, even if the end client owns the copyright to the script itself, they don’t actually own the rights to the voice recordings. When you pay a usage fee, you’re buying a licence to USE a voice for your corporate video, across agreed platforms, for an agreed amount of time in an agreed geographical location or locations.

Jenny M. March 2021
And is simply why voiceover artists should not be expected to work to in-perpituity buy-outs, as Jenny continues…

A full buy-out in perpetuity agreement or a flat fee is like Pepsi approaching Beyonce to use one of her songs in their Summer advertising campaign and then continuing to use it across any platform, globally, forever. If it’s an all rights in perpetuity agreement, then there’s nothing stopping Pepsi from really going to town and adding some S-Club 7 backing vocals and a Westlife key change. ”

However, Jenny (and other voiceover artists would agree) that in-perpetuity can be agreed upon on certain occasions, for example, if the VO is for an online explainer video with no commercial usage, or if it’s for a small/local business where the viewership is likely to be small.

Yet, if you really wish to secure in-perpetuity usage rights, then be aware that this will cost you a lot more because you are waiving the usage rights on the artist’s intellectual property and potentially preventing them from voicing for a similar brand/competing company in the future – so the rate has to be worth the risk!

Instead, Jenny suggests opting for a longer licence;

A corporate explainer video like this will no doubt be irrelevant after 12 to 18 months. A 2 – 5 year licence fee should more than cover it and will cost you much less than a full buy-out in perpetuity fee.

Ultimatly, if you’re looking to hire a professional voiceover for your corporate video, then it’s important to remember that it’s not just the artist’s time you’re paying for, but the usage too.

Why Hire a Voiceover at Great British Voices?

As a voiceover bureau (not an agency) at Great British Voices, we do have a bit of flexibility when it comes to rates and always take our client’s budgets into consideration, but at the same time, we never wish to undermine the industry nor our artists by accepting low fees. Therefore we always set our rates in line with the UK rate guide, created by the wonderful team at Gravy for the Brain.

We work on the principle that ”all rates are negotiable” but for us to work to these terms, our clients have to offer us full transparency also. So, providing that there’s no ambiguity on what the job involves and usage required, we’re always happy to negotiate to find you the best rate possible.

Here’s what can you expect if you hire a voiceover artist at Great British Voices;

1. We have over 300 professional British voiceover artists on our books – adults and kids – so no matter what age or accent you’re after, we can deliver and provide customised shortlists and custom demos on request.

2. All of our artists have professional home studio facilities – so no travel restraints or logistically issues to worry about.

3. All of our artists can clean/edit audio to a high standard.

4. Dial-in can be arranged as standard, so you can direct the artist as they record your script.

5. Turnaround time is often between 24-48 hours from receipt of script.

6. We are a small team of 4, so you know you’ll be getting a truly personal service when working with us.

7. We have worked with some of the world’s most well-known brands and have many repeat clients.

8. Wish to book a recognisable voice? We also work alongside a number of high profile Celebrities available for voiceover.

10 Reasons to Hire a Business Speaker

22nd Oct 2021

Whether it’s for a corporate event or company training day, hiring a professional business speaker can be extremely beneficial, so it’s important you choose a speaker who is going to engage and add value to your company and/or event.

So, here’s our top ten reasons as to why you should hire a business speaker for your next corporate event –

1. To Inspire

One of the top reasons companies hire a speaker is to engage with and inspire their audience and/or staff. Inspirational talks are often antidotes of the speaker’s own life experiences and about overcoming adversity. As well as offering positivity and motivation, they also teach other essential skills relevant to business, such as perseverance and problem-solving. Many of these talks focus on mental health, achieving a better work-life balance and personal development.

2. To Motivate / Encourage Success

Inspirational and motivational speakers usually go hand-in-hand, as stories of inspiration are often used to motivate too. However, motivational talks do not always need to come from a place of self-discovery and adversity. Corporate speakers are often hired to give motivational talks to their clients on how to achieve in business in the form of a motivational keynote talk. They can also be useful for employee training – used to encourage success, create engagement, boost team skills and improve leadership.

Our motivational speakers are renowned for their knowledge, passion, and most essentially, their ability to coax the best out of those around them – whatever it takes, whatever and wherever the challenge. They’ll make a memorable and lasting impression on you for the unforgettable motivation they’ll have inspired within you.

3. For Resilience

During challenging times (especially in the wake of lockdowns and Covid-19) speakers who offer talks on resilience are very empowering. A mix of story-style inspiration and motivational keynote, these speakers teach us that we can overcome trials whether within our personal lives or business lives.

4. To Increase Business Communication

If you’re looking to communicate an idea to your employees and/or audience, then hiring a corporate speaker, is a great way to do this. Perhaps, it’s a new business module you wish to pitch or a new commercial campaign – but having an experienced business speaker on board, who’s known for their success within your industry, can be a great way to increase your business profile and generate new ideas. Often a Q&A between the speaker and audience can also enhance communication and help circulate ideas also, as well as inspire, motivate and even challenge ideas from competitors.

5. To Enhance Leadership and Team-building Skills

Companies with poor management will struggle to succeed. But, by hiring a professional business speaker – like , you can improve your leadership skills and change the way you do business for the better. Leadership speakers also offer valuable information on team building, the future of business, communications, personal development, workplace equality and so much more…

To enhance your business management hire a one of these Leadership Speakers

‘Leading in the Next Normal‘ author R. Michael Anderson offers an experts Post Covid Leadership Talk for businesses learning to adapt from the effects of Covid-19 lockdowns. Or ”Navigate the Storm” with business expert Mark Denton; discover how to be an inspirational leader under pressure with RAF female front line pilot Mandy Hickson or challenge your ‘mental toughness’ with world-class business speaker, Penny Mallory (below).

Similarly, if your team does not have the knowledge or skills required in business, then this can really be detrimental to your company also.

Many business speakers offer tried and tested team-building exercises that can help overcome these obstacles, giving your employees practical skills to use within the workplace and out.

Furthermore, strong team communication and trust are also important, and building that trust should be a priority within any business. Not only will this help your business succeed, but is also extremely important that employees feel comfortable for their own well-being too.

6. To Facilitate Events

Hiring a professional conference facilitator to moderate your event can help to ensure your event runs smoothly and that the purpose of the engagement is met. It’s the facilitator’s role to introduce the session and any other speakers, to help keep to schedule, and to act as mediator so everyone gets heard.

7. To Entertain

Looking to lighten the mood? Then a corporate entertainer can offers something , but still can add immense value to your business event. Whether it’s a comedian, a magician or an uplifting after-dinner speaker, a corporate entertainer can ensure your event is one to remember.

8. To Promote Positive Mental Health

With one of the main causes of poor mental health being contributed to a negative and/or stressful work environment, business speakers are now being booked to discuss more often mental health within the workplace and its effect on business success and employee wellbeing. Furthermore, with men being significantly less likely to discuss their mental health with friends and family, it’s important that we (as employers, colleges and friends) encourage everyone to feel confident in speaking up when it comes to their own emotional wellbeing.

9. To Make Diversity, Equality & Inclusion (DEI) a Priority

Is your business really doing everything it can to be inclusive? With the aim to educate and inspire – diversity, equality and inclusion speakers have a resounding impact, helping businesses achieve inclusivity. These speakers are able to offer a true insight into DEI issues and culture, and offer valuable insight as to how your business take action against inequality.

By sharing their own personal tales, DEI speakers have tackled the challenges of discrimination in the workplace first-hand, making them powerful, emotive advocates for DEI for business and cultural change.

On social media, influencers are extremely beneficial at attracting specific audiences and promoting your product and/or brand to them.

Event & Award Hosts

If at the end of another pretty tough year you’re looking to award your team, why not add a bit of Hollywood glamour and hold a very glitzy Christmas awards ceremony. What the prizes are is up to you, but when it comes to hosting, why not hire a presenter who is experienced in speaking with stars…

Event hosts such as Craig and Amy are no strangers to live hosting and will help ensure your event runs smoothly to see them in action – click on the links above to view their showreels. Alternatively, we have hundreds of voiceover artists who are experienced Voice of God announcers. A Chat with Mandy Hickson – Motivational Female RAF Fighter Pilot.

27th Sep 2021

As a member of the Royal Airforce, Mandy Hickson was the only female pilot on the Front Line Tornado Squadron.

As a front line pilot, Mandy has navigated her way across some world’s most hostile environments, including patrolling the ‘No Fly’ zone over Iraq.  In charge of the latest weaponry, she and her unit were ready to drop ordnance on any target in support of operations.

Mandy now leads motivational keynote talks to businesses and leaders worldwide, sharing her experiences of working within an elite team of fast jet operators, to audiences with great clarity and humour, outlining how the same values apply within any environment.

As a keynote speaker, Mandy demonstrates only too well the importance of remaining calm under pressure and leading, quite literally, from the front, in order to get the best from herself and her team. You can read more about Mandy’s keynote talks here.

Here Great British Speakers’ director Jane Farnham had a chat with Mandy about her career as an RAF pilot and what makes her one of the most in-demand female Motivational Speakers in the UK.
